Is Your Website Passing Google's Speed Test? Core Web Vitals Explained for Rwandan Businesses
A slow website costs you customers before they ever read a word. Google knows this, so it measures how a page feels to real visitors using a set of signals called Core Web Vitals. They are part of the page experience signals Google uses in search, which makes them worth caring about if you want to be found for searches like “web design in Rwanda”.
The three numbers that matter
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): how quickly the main content appears. Good is under 2.5 seconds.
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint): how quickly the page responds when someone taps or clicks. Good is under 200 milliseconds.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): how much the page jumps around while loading. Good is under 0.1.
Google judges these at the 75th percentile of real visitor data, so it is your slower visitors, often on mid-range phones and patchy connections, who decide whether you pass.
What changed in 2024
In March 2024, Google replaced the old First Input Delay (FID) metric with INP. FID only measured the delay before a visitor’s very first interaction; INP looks at responsiveness across the whole visit. It is a much tougher test, and many sites that used to pass now fail. According to the HTTP Archive’s 2024 Web Almanac, only around 43% of mobile sites pass Core Web Vitals.
Six fixes that make the biggest difference
- Compress and resize images. Use modern formats such as WebP or AVIF and serve the size the screen needs. Oversized photos are the most common cause of a slow LCP.
- Ship less JavaScript. Every script, chat widget and tracker competes for the phone’s processor and hurts INP. Remove what you do not use.
- Reserve space for images, ads and embeds by setting width and height, so the page does not jump (CLS).
- Load fonts sensibly. Limit the number of font files and avoid text that flashes or shifts when fonts arrive.
- Use good hosting and caching. A fast, well-configured server and caching shorten the wait before anything appears.
- Test on a real phone. Check your site on a mid-range Android phone over mobile data, not just on a fast laptop.
How to check your site today
Paste your address into Google’s PageSpeed Insights, or open the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console. Look at the results for mobile first, because that is where most sites struggle.
